Organic Herbs: Chives - Garlic Planting Instructions:
Chives grow best in full sun and in soil that is moist, fertile, and well-draining. Plant your seeds 4 to 6 weeks before the last frost or as soon as the soil is workable in the spring. Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep and 8 to 10" apart. Once established, thin the plants to 1' apart. You can also start the seeds indoors 8 to 10 weeks before the last frost. Grow time is approximately 60 days.

To harvest foliage, cut back the greens 2" above ground level once the outer spears of the Chives have reached at least 6" tall. Harvesting will keep the new, tender foliage available to continue growth. Harvest flowers when in full bloom, but before the bud has opened. The Chive's flowers can be dried and eaten. Divide the plants every 3 to 4 years in the spring for the best results.
